How EV charging time is calculated
Formula:
Time (hours) = Battery (kWh) ÷ Charger power (kW) × (1 / Efficiency)
EV charging time depends on the usable battery capacity in kilowatt-hours, the charger output power in kilowatts, and the charging efficiency. This simple calculator shows how many hours it takes to charge your electric vehicle from empty to full based on rated charger power.
Formula:
Time (hours) = Battery (kWh) ÷ Charger power (kW) × (1 / Efficiency)
AC chargers (home/level-2) normally take longer, while DC fast chargers deliver much higher power and therefore reduce total charging time significantly.
EV chargers are not 100% efficient. Most home chargers operate between 85-95% depending on charging hardware and onboard electronics.
